Buying a computer or phone from its specification sheet often means overpaying for invisible performance while missing the real limit: insufficient memory, a difficult battery replacement, full storage, short software support or unsuitable ports.
A good decision starts with use, plans for ownership length and includes backup, updates and repairability from the beginning.
Describe the work before the product
List the three most demanding tasks and three daily constraints. Office work, development, editing, gaming and mobility require different trade-offs.
For a computer, consider:
- software and peripheral compatibility;
- memory required now and in three years;
- battery life or cooling;
- display, keyboard and ports;
- repair and storage expansion;
- operating-system support.

Size for reality, not an imaginary decade
Headroom is useful, but doubling every component is not always sensible. For office and web use, memory, storage and physical quality often matter more than a flagship processor. Development containers and large projects make memory important. Creative work requires checking acceleration in the applications actually used.
A refurbished device can provide a higher tier at the same price. Require battery condition, warranty, returns and remaining update support. A cheap but very old model becomes expensive when it needs early replacement.
Choose a phone for useful life
Camera and performance attract attention, but support, battery, parts and storage determine longevity. European ecodesign and labelling rules increasingly expose these characteristics.

Diagnose the network before replacing the router
Slow Wi-Fi is not always caused by the radio standard. Measure near the router and in problem areas. Check placement, walls, channel congestion, access-point backhaul and client limits.
Mesh helps when coverage requires several access points, but Ethernet backhaul is often more stable than wireless repetition. Moving to Wi-Fi 7 cannot fix a slower Internet connection or poor placement.
Separate storage from backup
Storage serves different needs:
- fast working space;
- sharing between users or devices;
- recovery after loss, failure or attack.

Maintain before replacing
Install updates, remove unused applications, monitor free space and check battery health. Startup programmes and browser extensions are usually more useful to review than installing a "cleaner".
Before replacement, ask whether a reinstall would fix the issue, whether battery or storage can be replaced, whether software remains supported and whether the new device solves a measured limit.
The best equipment is not the one with the longest feature list. It performs the intended work, remains supported, backs up easily and can be repaired at reasonable cost.
