A EUR700 laptop can be an excellent study tool and a poor development machine. A EUR1,800 model may speed up video editing while being too heavy and noisy for two hours of daily train travel. The useful question is not "which is the best laptop?", but which configuration removes the constraints of your workload without charging you for unused performance.

This guide does not rank models that will be replaced by the next promotion. It provides a buying method and indicative budgets observed on the French market on August 1, 2026. A discount is only worthwhile when the configuration, display and expected lifespan still match the need.

These figures define useful search areas, not absolute thresholds. Promotions can move a good configuration from one bracket to another. Conversely, a premium finish can increase the price without adding the memory or ports you need.

Minimum requirements are not a sensible purchasing target

Microsoft allows Windows 11 to run with 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage. Those figures define operating-system compatibility, not a comfortable experience over several years. The system, browser, video calls, synchronisation and updates all compete for the same resources.

In 2026, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD are the reasonable starting point for a versatile new laptop. A less capable machine can still make sense for very light use, as a secondary computer or at a particularly low price, but its limits should be deliberate.

The budget must also include everything hidden by the processor name: a usable webcam, reliable Wi-Fi, keyboard, trackpad, battery, charger, ports and seller warranty. A laptop that immediately requires a dock, external SSD and travel charger costs more than its displayed price.

Office work and study: prioritise balance

For documents, browsing, lessons, video and calls, a modern mid-range mobile processor is ample. Memory, display quality and battery life provide more daily comfort than a flagship CPU running at ten per cent of its capacity.

Target 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB SSD and an IPS display with at least 1920 x 1080 pixels. A 16:10 panel at 1920 x 1200 shows more lines of a document. Fourteen inches is convenient for transport; 15 or 16 inches provides more space when the laptop rarely leaves the desk.

Below EUR500, compromises often accumulate: 8 GB of soldered memory, a dim panel, small battery, limited storage or fragile construction. That price can work when those limits have been checked. Between EUR600 and EUR900, balanced configurations are more common. Manufacturer stores observed in August 2026 already list 16 GB and 512 GB laptops in this range, depending on promotions.

Mobility: buy grams, watt-hours and a good keyboard

Anyone carrying a computer every day should count the charger as well as the machine. Between 1.2 and 1.5 kg, a 13 or 14-inch laptop is generally portable without sacrificing every connector. Lighter can be excellent, but may cost considerably more or provide fewer ports.

Battery capacity in Wh helps comparisons but cannot predict endurance alone. The screen, processor, applications and power profile change the result. Treat very light video-playback figures cautiously. Look for tests that resemble your workload: calls, a busy browser, compilation or travel at high brightness.

USB-C Power Delivery can replace proprietary chargers, provided both port and adapter deliver the required power. Also check whether the USB-C port supports video and high-speed data. Identical connectors can hide very different capabilities.

Development: memory before the headline processor

An editor, several browsers, a local database, Docker and build tools can quickly exceed 16 GB. Docker Desktop officially requires 8 GB for its Windows environment, but shares memory with everything else. For several years of work with containers, mobile emulators or virtual machines, 32 GB is a more coherent target.

A 1 TB SSD avoids constantly managing container images, dependencies, SDKs and projects. The processor must maintain performance: a fast chip in a poorly cooled chassis can slow down during a long build. Access to a second SSD or removable memory deserves as much attention as the core count.

On Windows, check the edition and virtualisation features required by your tools. On macOS, validate platform-specific development software. On Linux, investigate Wi-Fi, sleep, webcam, fingerprint reader and power management for the exact model.

Photo and video: size the machine around software and media

A good display is not simply OLED or IPS. Creative work requires the relevant colour-space coverage, measured accuracy, brightness, reflection handling and calibration support. Higher resolution provides more workspace but also places greater demands on the battery and GPU.

Adobe recommends 16 GB for HD video and 32 GB or more for 4K in Premiere, with 8 GB of GPU memory in its current recommended Windows configuration. This is not a universal rule: codecs, effects, software and hardware acceleration significantly affect requirements. Start from the recommendations for your version and workflow, then add room for multitasking.

A 1 TB internal SSD is a practical minimum for regular projects, but it does not replace media storage or backup. Check the throughput of ports used by external SSDs and displays. For a discrete GPU, compare video memory and the power actually available in that chassis, not just the chip's commercial name.

Gaming: the same GPU does not guarantee the same performance

In a gaming laptop, cooling and the electrical power allocated to the GPU strongly affect results. Two machines with the same graphics reference can perform differently. Find tests of the exact model that include noise, temperature and sustained performance.

Match the display to the gaming target. A high-refresh 1080p or 1200p panel may be more coherent than a very high resolution the GPU struggles to drive. Check brightness, colour and adaptive synchronisation, not only the maximum refresh rate.

A 1 TB SSD fills quickly with modern games. Access to a second slot can extend the machine's useful life. Remember that gaming laptops generally deliver their best performance when connected to their full-size charger; they are not automatically mobile computers in daily use.

Understand the components without drowning in references

Processor

Compare generation, power class and sustained performance, not merely "Core 7" or "Ryzen 7". Manufacturers can sell several architectures under similar names at the same time. Efficiency matters more than brief peak speed for light work. For compilation, rendering and calculation, examine long tests and noise levels.

Memory

16 GB suits most everyday use; 32 GB becomes relevant for development, creation and heavy multitasking; 64 GB serves identified workloads. If memory is soldered, the decision is permanent. Replaceable modules offer an upgrade path, but check the number of slots and the configuration supplied.

Storage

512 GB is comfortable for office work and study when external or cloud storage is organised. Prefer 1 TB for development, photo, video and gaming. Check whether the SSD can be replaced and whether opening the chassis affects the manufacturer's warranty terms.

GPU and NPU

Modern integrated graphics handle displays, video and plenty of photo work. A discrete GPU is justified for gaming, 3D, certain video effects and accelerated computing. For local AI, software compatibility and available memory matter more than an "AI PC" badge.

Windows, macOS, Linux or Arm: start with the applications

Windows offers the broadest hardware and gaming catalogue, but quality varies within every range. macOS simplifies hardware choices and provides strong integration on Apple machines, at the cost of a more closed ecosystem and generally non-upgradable internal components. Linux can extend and customise a machine's use, but compatibility depends more heavily on the exact model.

Arm now spans Windows and macOS. It can provide excellent efficiency for browsing and office work. For gaming, older peripherals, corporate security or specialist tools, validate every component. Never infer compatibility from the words "runs Windows" alone.

Repairability, refurbished devices and five-year cost

France's laptop repairability index considers disassembly, documentation, and the availability and price of parts. It does not promise an economical repair, but it prompts a useful question before buying: will the battery, keyboard, screen and storage still be replaceable?

For a refurbished device, ask for battery health or capacity, exact configuration, keyboard layout, accessories, cosmetic defects and return policy. In France, a second-hand purchase from a professional seller benefits from the statutory conformity guarantee under the conditions set by law; a commercial warranty does not replace it.

Calculate the complete cost: machine, impossible memory upgrade, dock, adapters, additional charger, storage and optional warranty. Spending EUR150 more to double memory or obtain a replaceable battery may be rational. Paying the same amount for an unnecessary display resolution may not be.

The checklist before paying

  1. List the three most demanding applications or games.
  2. Set a budget that includes adapters, dock and storage.
  3. Target at least 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD for a versatile new purchase.
  4. Move to 32 GB when containers, VMs, editing or demanding creative work are routine.
  5. Check whether memory, SSD and battery are replaceable.
  6. Verify the exact display model, not merely its resolution.
  7. Test the keyboard, trackpad, webcam and noise when possible.
  8. List the ports and displays you actually use.
  9. Check USB-C charging, required power and charger weight.
  10. For Arm or Linux, validate applications, peripherals, VPN and sleep.
  11. Review the repairability index and the seller's warranty conditions.
  12. Keep a return option after testing the laptop with your real workload.

The right laptop is one whose compromises you understand

There is no universal configuration. There are, however, poor combinations: a flagship processor with 8 GB of soldered memory, a powerful GPU in a chassis unable to cool it, a spectacular screen with a tiny battery, or an ultraportable that requires four adapters.

Start with software, mobility and ownership duration. Then size memory, storage, display and GPU. The processor name comes later. This method will not guarantee the most impressive promotion; it improves the odds of buying a computer that remains pleasant long after the discount has been forgotten.
