Battery life targets long outings
The 45-hour figure applies to outdoor activity recording. It addresses a different need from everyday endurance: tracking a long hike, ultramarathon or cycling trip without an intermediate charge. Actual results depend on GPS, cellular use, temperature and enabled features.
Apple claims accurate positioning directly on the watch. An electronic device should never be the only safety tool in a remote area. Offline maps, an appropriate emergency method and backup power remain necessary depending on the route.
The Series 12 health system
Ultra 4 adopts S11 and the Health Sensing System. It measures heart rate every five seconds during the day, samples variability more often and combines recovery, sleep and training in a readiness score.
These data are most useful when comparing a person against their own baseline. They should not be used to self-diagnose or dismiss symptoms. Athletes can combine the score with perceived fatigue and training load, rather than letting it automatically decide a session.
A rugged case that will not fit everyone
The 49mm titanium enclosure protects the display and creates a large surface that remains readable with gloves or while moving. It also dominates smaller wrists and may be uncomfortable during sleep. Natural and black finishes are restrained, although activity-specific bands can increase the final price.
For urban running, gym sessions and daily health tracking, Series 12 already covers the essentials at EUR 449. The EUR 450 difference primarily pays for the enclosure, extended endurance and outdoor use cases.
Some features are coming later
Live Rewind and Siri Recap are scheduled for beta toward the end of 2026. Apple says their initial release will be in English and outside the European Union. Buyers should therefore judge Ultra 4 by launch-day capabilities, not by a roadmap without a firm French date.
watchOS 27 arrives September 14 for compatible watches. Existing hardware will receive part of the software improvement, reducing the case for replacement when current battery life is sufficient.
Who should buy Ultra 4?
It serves athletes whose sessions regularly exceed a standard Series battery, people who value an especially readable screen and activities where a reinforced body has practical value. It is excessive for notifications and a handful of weekly workouts.
Ultra 4 strengthens a specialist watch rather than reinventing the range. Workout endurance is its main selling point; the health system shared with Series 12 does not by itself justify twice the price.
