Apple Watch Series 12 puts health at the center of its update. Its new sensing system samples heart rate every five seconds during the day, analyzes variability more frequently and produces a daily readiness score. It will be available September 18 from EUR 449 in France.

More frequent readings are not a diagnosis
The Health Sensing System combines new sensors with algorithms running on S11. Apple claims daytime heart-rate sampling every five seconds and up to 24 times more heart-rate variability readings. That density may reveal personal trends more clearly than isolated measurements.
The watch combines sleep, activity, heart rate and other signals into a readiness score. It is designed to suggest whether the body appears ready for exertion or would benefit from recovery. It remains an estimate affected by illness, stress, alcohol, travel and poor sensor contact.
A consumer watch does not replace a clinical ECG or medical professional. Persistent alerts, pain or discomfort require medical advice even when the watch reports nothing unusual.
S11 and a more protected display

S11 handles continuous sensor processing while preserving Apple's claimed everyday operation. Two sizes, 42 and 46mm, accommodate different wrists. Aluminum, titanium and ceramic span several price and weight levels.
On aluminum models, Ceramic Shield 2 is said to be 60 percent tougher than the previous Ion-X glass. That should help against scratches and minor impacts without making the display unbreakable. A protector may still make sense for manual work and exposed sports.
watchOS 27 and delayed audio features
watchOS 27 arrives September 14 for compatible models. Health features gain value over time: a few days cannot build a strong personal baseline. Owners need to wear the watch consistently, including at night, and keep it properly fitted.
Apple has also announced Audio Intelligence features, but some will arrive later and not all will initially be available in the European Union. That caveat matters when buying: an announced feature is not necessarily usable out of the box.
Should Series 10 or 11 owners upgrade?
For a recent watch, the answer depends on the value of continuous tracking and readiness. General performance and core functions do not make previous generations obsolete. A worn battery may provide a stronger reason to upgrade than the new chip alone.
Series 8 and older owners will see a clearer difference in display, responsiveness, sensors and software support. Series 12 primarily improves interpretation of health trends; it is not by itself a reason to replace a reliable recent watch.
