iPhone Duo: Apple's first foldable starts at EUR 2,339

Apple is entering the foldable phone market with iPhone Duo. Closed, it offers a 5.4-inch outer display; opened, its inner panel reaches 7.6 inches. A20 Pro, a titanium body and a dedicated iOS 27.1 interface are meant to turn that larger surface into a multitasking tool. French pricing starts at EUR 2,339.

The short answer

Two displays designed as one device

Apple uses the same aspect ratio outside and inside. Apps should therefore move between screens without abruptly rebuilding their interfaces. The outer panel handles quick tasks; opening the phone provides room to read, edit an image or use two apps together.

iOS 27.1 adds split view, two windows from the same app and saved app pairs. This is critical because a foldable adds little if software treats the inner panel as an enlarged phone. Developers will still need to adapt their layouts, and not every app will take advantage of the format immediately.

A20 Pro, two batteries and vapor cooling

iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as iPhone 18 Pro, paired with a vapor chamber. Apple distributes battery cells across both halves. It claims up to 31 hours of video on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer one. Real-world use alternating screens, 5G and multitasking may differ substantially.

Titanium helps control weight while protecting the hinge. IP68 resistance is reassuring, but a flexible inner panel remains more vulnerable to marks and impact than conventional glass. Trying the device in a store is advisable before spending this much.

A camera system below the Pro lineup

The rear system combines a 48MP Main camera with an ultrawide. The inner FaceTime camera sits beneath the display. The outer screen can become a preview so the subject can frame a portrait captured by the main cameras, one genuinely useful consequence of the folding design.

Video reaches 4K at 120 fps. However, the missing third rear camera shows that the premium price buys the hinge and dual displays first, not Apple's most versatile photography system.

An expensive first-generation product

Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, with the top model reaching EUR 3,839. Support for the USB-C Apple Pencil is due later, potentially helping note taking and annotation without turning the phone into a universal iPad replacement.

iPhone Duo targets people who value a large display in their pocket and accept both the cost and first-generation uncertainty. For most buyers, an iPhone 18 Pro and an iPad remain a less risky and sometimes cheaper combination. Duo is a genuinely new Apple proposition, but its success will depend on hinge durability, crease visibility and app support.
