AirPods 5: open-ear noise cancellation starts at EUR 149

Apple has updated its open earbuds with AirPods 5. Active noise cancellation now comes with both versions without silicone tips, and Apple claims it is 50 percent more effective than AirPods 4 with ANC. French prices are EUR 149 with a USB-C case and EUR 169 with a wireless charging case.

The short answer

Both versions arrive September 18. Each has noise cancellation; the EUR 20 premium mainly buys wireless charging, longer battery life and stem-based swipe volume controls.

Reducing noise without sealing the ear canal

AirPods 5 retain an open fit. They suit people who dislike the pressure or silicone tips of AirPods Pro. The tradeoff is physical: without a seal, more external sound enters, so improved microphones and processing are unlikely to match in-ear isolation on a plane or noisy train.

Apple describes a multiport acoustic architecture and Adaptive EQ that adjusts playback to ear position. Its 50 percent improvement is measured against AirPods 4 with ANC, not AirPods Pro. Fit also depends on ear shape; software cannot repair an earbud that will not stay secure.

Siri, head gestures and translation

The earbuds recognize head movements to accept or decline some interactions without speaking. Siri AI is intended to understand more context and offer live translation. Its usefulness will depend on language support, connectivity and which services are enabled in Europe.

Translation may help with casual exchanges, but it should not replace a qualified interpreter for medical care, contracts or safety-critical situations. Users should also understand when audio leaves the device and what data is retained.

The EUR 169 version makes more sense

An extra hour with ANC and wireless charging make the higher model more flexible. Swiping the stem also avoids reaching for an iPhone to change volume. For a EUR 20 difference, this is the logical version for daily use.

The EUR 149 model remains suitable for occasional listening and buyers comfortable with USB-C charging. In both cases, the battery is a difficult-to-replace consumable, so keeping functional AirPods 4 is often more sensible than upgrading every year.

AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro?

Comfort matters more than the specification sheet. AirPods 5 prioritize an open sensation and environmental awareness. AirPods Pro provide stronger isolation, especially in transport, and their replaceable tips help tune the fit.

AirPods 5 are Apple's most complete entry-level earbuds yet, but noise cancellation cannot eliminate the structural compromise of an open design. A physical trial remains the best way to assess comfort, stability and isolation.
