WhatsApp is opening username reservations before a gradual launch later in 2026. People will be able to start a conversation without exposing their phone number. That is a major change for classifieds, public groups, creators and anyone reluctant to share a persistent identifier with a stranger.

The lack of a directory is significant. A stranger cannot browse names or receive automatic suggestions and must know the exact identifier. Owners can add a key that a sender must also possess for another layer of control.

That key makes sense for a personal account but creates friction for a business that wants to be reachable. Users will have to choose between discoverability and control.

Useful privacy, not anonymity

WhatsApp still retains the phone number used to create and secure an account. Meta also handles metadata about connections, devices and interactions, although personal conversation content remains end-to-end encrypted. A username does not turn WhatsApp into an anonymous messenger.

Spam may change shape. A number could leak from an address book; an easy username can be guessed. Controls for group invitations, calls from unknown people and profile visibility remain as important as the new mask.

Sensible launch settings

Choose an identifier that does not reveal a birth date or location. Enable two-step verification, inspect linked devices and limit who can see profile photo, status and last-seen information. For private use, add a key and share it over another channel.

Businesses should publish usernames only through official properties and state that they will never request login codes. Users still need to confirm identity before payments or document transfers.

Usernames fix one of WhatsApp's oldest weaknesses: exposing a number just to talk. They reduce disclosure, but they do not replace privacy settings or basic defenses against impersonation.
