Sony is launching Live TV on PlayStation 5, a destination containing more than one hundred free ad-supported channels. It is available through the console's Media section without another television subscription, but only in the United States at launch.

A FAST channel is not the same as an on-demand platform: it runs a continuous schedule, although some programs may also be available separately.
The console becomes a video hub
PS5 already hosts major streaming apps. Live TV adds a more immediate experience: opening a channel without choosing an episode or maintaining a watchlist. The format suits news, secondary sports, reruns and themed programming.
For Sony, it also keeps users inside the PlayStation interface between gaming sessions and gives the Media tab a clearer role.
Free means attention-funded
The monetary price is replaced by ad breaks and potentially audience measurement. Review PlayStation account privacy settings and the policies of channel providers, as data practices may differ from games.
Parents should also check what each profile can access. A linear channel may not provide the same controls as a dedicated children's app.
Not an international launch yet
The announcement applies to US players. Media rights, partners and catalogs are territorial, so there is no guarantee of a quick European expansion. Artificially changing account region can create payment or terms-of-service issues.
FAST services already exist through smart TVs and specialist apps in many countries. The notable change is native aggregation within the console.
Should a PS5 be used for television?
It avoids switching devices, but a console generally consumes more power than a small streaming box or television app. For several hours of daily viewing, energy use and fan noise may matter.
Live TV strengthens PS5 as a media device without replacing premium subscriptions or local television. Its value will depend on the actual catalog and any international expansion, which Sony has not yet announced.
